Grey elm is fairly hard.
It's very pretty and the grain is quite chatoyant, but it's difficult to work.
It is dimensionally unstable, especially before it is completely dry.
It has a very bold look when stained, but also looks interesting when not stained. The wood in this clock is not stained.
Since this is a chiming clock, it sits 1/4" up off the mantletop for the sound to escape. Also, there are sound holes in the face.
